Howdy, my name is Dr Meagan Wheeless. I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Texas A&M University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling both from the University of Texas, Austin.
I previously worked for 6 years as a rehabilitative counselor and psychotherapist for military veterans who were transitioning back into the civilian workforce. After years of incorporating equine therapy programs and service dogs into my work, I decided to pursue veterinary medicine. I saw the tremendous impact that animals make in people’s lives and wanted to make a difference for animals in return.
I am an 8th generation Texan, originally from Austin. In April 2017 my family and I all moved to Australia on a 457 visa to embark on a new adventure together. People may think we are crazy for bringing the whole crew but we couldn’t imagine making a home here without each of them, including: fellow native Texan husband- Chance; Golden Retriever- Cali; black Lab- Canan; Terrier-Doxie mix- Lola; Chihuahua- Lily; and Ginger Manx cat- Mason. They say everything is bigger in Texas and that certainly includes their personalities! Eventually we would love to expand our family with horses, goats, and alpacas.
I have a strong passion for travel and international animal welfare. I have done externships and volunteer work all over the world including the Galapagos Islands, Nicaragua, Peru, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. I hope to continue this work domestic and abroad through outreach/community education programs and spay-neuter clinics.
I love to spend my spare time outdoors with my husband and dogs, particularly hiking, paddling, and swimming in the lakes, rivers, and the ocean. I also love photography and creating works of art out of refurbished material.
